Brainspotting
Brainspotting is a neurobiological intervention that uses specific eye positions to connect to unprocessed pain, illness, trauma, or other unwanted symptoms or sensations stored in one’s brain.
Brainspotting
“Where you look affects how you feel.” – David Grand
Eye positions are found using the brain and body’s organic reflexes and sensations connected to a targeted scenario, feeling, thought, or traumatic experience. These eye positions, called Brainspots, connect to an individual’s subcortical part of their brain.
The goal of each Brainspot is to bypass an individual’s natural conscious thinking processes of our “upstairs brain” (our neocortex) and process these experiences at the deeper, more emotional, and body-based “downstairs brain” (our subcortex). Our subcortical brain (containing parts of the limbic system) is responsible for learning, consciousness, emotions, and motion. Our limbic system (sometimes referred to as the emotional center) of the brain is believed to be where unwanted sensations, trauma, or symptoms become “stuck.”
A Deeper Connection
Brainspotting allows for deeper connection to be made to the “stuck” areas of the brain during processing (like a hyper-focused mindfulness). Deeper connections can help the individual process through pain, maladaptive behaviors, negative thoughts, or trauma-related experiences or feelings. As a trauma-informed intervention, Brainspotting does not require an individual to “relive” the traumatic situation to be able to process and heal from it. Brainspotting is conducted in a safe environment harnessing the rapport with the therapist to allow processing of unpleasant stimuli or sensations. Processing can occur either externally (spoken aloud) or internally (within one’s mind).
Using biolateral music throughout the Brainspotting process, an individual is further assisted to calm their nervous system while healing the targeted sensation or scenario. Calming the nervous system while processing allows an individual to release not only the emotional distress, but also the physical stress locked in the brain and body.
Research has shown that Brainspotting benefits include:
Reduction in anxiety, depression, or PTSD symptoms
Reduction in pain
Reduction in distressing memories or triggers
Reduction in negative thoughts or thought patterns
Better sleep
Increased energy
